Advanced Numerical Analysis

Geo-Design are at the forefront of the application of advanced numerical analysis to complex engineering problems, utilising 2D and 3D continuum or discontinuum analysis methods appropriate to the project-specific ground conditions.

In particular, we analyse the ground-structure interaction and the explicit effects of ground support systems. This allows ground loads and displacements to be extracted and used for full structural analysis and support design verification.

  • Accurate Input Properties
Simulation of comprehensive geological data into realistic rock mass behavioural models using the discrete element approach has been the key feature of our modelling workflows. The application of these methods provides a basis for understanding potential failure mechanisms and hence the basis for engineering design of ground support systems for both surface and underground structures.
  • Constitutive Model Selection
From representative discontinuity shear behaviour using the Barton-Bandis criterion, to Cohesion-Weakining Friction-Strengthening and creep models, we utilise the most appropriate constitutive model for each engineering question.
  • Engineering Assessment
Engineering interpretation of numerical models is a key step in the design process. We use intrinsic (unsupported) analyses to evaluate the in-situ stability state of the excavation, before evaluating and verifying engineering support measures.
