Southam Quarry Tunnel
UK

Sector:
Civils & Mining – materials handling transport.

Southam Quarry in Warwickshire extracts 500,000 tonnes of clay and limestone annually for cement production at Cemex’s nearby Rugby Cement Plant.  An £8M investment to extend the quarry included the construction of a 60m long tunnel beneath a major road, required to accommodate part of a 1km long conveyor belt to transport extracted material to the processing plant.

Geo-Design’s expert team of geologists and engineers developed detailed reference designs for the tunnels and assisted Cemex with tendering the construction contract.

  • Geological modelling
Geological and hydrogeological evaluation of rock mass conditions.
  • Reference design and analysis
Review of rock mass failure mechanisms. Detailed reference design of temporary support. Surface settlement analysis.
  • Regulatory approvals
Assistance with approval from the local authority and highways agency.
