Seven Sisters Limestone Mines
UK

The Seven Sisters Limestone Mines, Dudley, UK are named after the seven inclined rock pillars that support the hanging wall of the mine.  These mined limestone caverns are a site of significant geological and archaeological interest holding both one of the most diverse and abundant fossil collections in the UK and being one of the early centres of the UK’s industrial and mining heritage.

Geo-Design were commissioned to assist Dudley Metropolitan borough Council in developing an outline mine stabilisation design for large caverns and openings to the surface, initially aiming for public access and latterly for long term preservation.

Sector: Mining – civils and historical preservation.

  • Geological and hydrogeological evaluation
Characterisation of the rock mass conditions.
  • Rock mass modelling
Development of deterministic rock mass models in 2D and 3D.
  • Laboratory testing
Derivation of rock mechanics parameters based on laboratory analysis and geomechanical logging.
  • Numerical analysis
Detailed stability assessment of the underground cavern complex and outline mine stabilisation design and verification utilising advanced discontinuum numerical modelling.
