Dublin Port Tunnel

The 4.5km long, €780M Dublin Port Tunnel included 2.4km of twin 11.7m diameter TBM excavated tunnels, with strategically positioned vehicle cross over caverns.  The alignment was constructed in weak bedded limestone, with shallow cover at key locations including the cross over caverns.

Geo-Design delivered construction design services for the crossover caverns.  Geo-Design’s services included advanced numerical analysis, structural calculations and design of cross passage support and construction sequence.

  • Detailed design
    Construction design of the two 14 m span lay-by vehicle crossover caverns in low cover bedded limestone-shale sequence.
  • Value engineering
    Design geometry optimisation and implementation and performance evaluation.
  • Risk analysis
    Project risk reduction achieved by logging of conditions via TBM cutterhead and moving the location of the cavern complex to avoid encountered adverse ground conditions.
