Clifton Suspension Bridge
UK

Geo-Design acted as Specialist Advisors to the Clifton Suspension Bridge Trust to assess the stability state of the rock slopes that support the bridge abutments and tunnel anchorages of this iconic 150 year old Grade I listed structure.

Sector:
Civils – transport, heavily loaded foundations, heritage.

  • Geological and rock mass models
Initial stability assessment, utilising engineering geological models derived from published data, slope mapping and site investigation with cored boreholes.
  • Stability analysis
Discontinuum numerical modelling to evaluate the stability reserve of foundations plus supporting slopes under adverse loading scenarios from the bridge foundation.
  • Inspection and maintenance
Following the completion of the studies Geo-Design were retained for ongoing inspection and maintenance, with a comprehensive instrumentation and monitoring plan.
