Castle Mill Basin – Mine Entrance Stabilisation (UK)

Castle Mill Basin – Mine Entrance Stabilisation

From 2009-2013, Geo-Design worked on the design and specification of a stabilisation scheme for an unstable disused mine entrance.

At Castle Mill Basin, it was identified that a disused mine entrance within bedded limestone was at risk of collapse and required stabilisation to mitigate the risk to canal users.

Geo-Design was appointed by Dudley Metropolitan Borough Council to design and specify the stabilisation scheme, complying with heavy restrictions arising from the safety and logistical considerations of the existing entrance.

Detailed geological modelling was used in this project to analyse the potential concept designs and to inform the final design of the stabilisation measures, and a stepped, piled retaining structure was selected for the final design.

This project was posted in Caverns and Underground Mines, Underground Mines.
