Rosia Montana Mine
Romania

Rosia Montana is located in the Apuseni Mountains in the west of Romania and contains preserved underground Roman gold mines within a complex of more recent mining.

An extensive Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) was undertaken as part of plans to recover remaining gold deposits using open pit methods.  The scheme was not developed and the area is now designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Geo-Design were commissioned as part of the EIA to map and characterise the historical mine workings and develop support designs to facilitate preservation of examples of the Roman and other historical mining and for public access to a large underground mine museum.

Sector: Mining – historical preservation.

  • Geological and hydrogeological evaluation
Independent evaluation of the rock mass conditions of the historical mine workings.
  • Stability assessment
Evaluation of the existing stability state, varying with span, stress and rock mass quality.
  • Ground support design
Estimates of support for the mine workings and preliminary cost estimates.
