Dublin Port Tunnel Cross Over Caverns (Ireland)

CLIENT:  NMI-JV – HASWELL CONSULTING ENGINEERS

The Dublin Port Tunnel is a twin bore roadway tunnel (4.5km in length and height clearance of 4.65m) that forms part of the M50 motorway around Dublin city, which began construction in 2001 and was officially opened to the public in 2006.

Geo-Design was involved in the design of the large span Cross Over Caverns and produced full detailed design of the Layby – Vehicle Crossover Cavern Complex situated in very low cover, bedded limestone-shale sequence.

Geo-Design’s involvement was from site investigation through into construction. Significant de-risking of the project was achieved via logging of the encountered conditions for the tunnel excavation and updating of the geological model to inform cavern design which was modified accordingly.
