Aznalcollar and Los Frailes Mines, Seville (Spain)

Aznalcollar Mine is a zinc-producing mine which was operational as an open-pit mine from the early 1970s to 1996. The Los Frailes orebody was discovered to the east of the Aznalcollar mine in the late 1980’s, and was developed into an open-pit zinc, copper, lead and silver mine which was operational until 1998.

In the mid 1990’s, Geo-Design was involved in undertaking an evaluation of geological and rock mass conditions for these mines to determine the key controls over stability of existing slopes and to aid future planning.
