Dr Stavros Bandis completed his PhD at the university of Leeds in 1980, and continued research in Norway where he established the BB failure criterion for rock discontinuities which has been adopted internationally. Since then he has become recognised as a world leader in the characterisation of discontinuities and rock masses and their numerical simulation. Within Geo-Design, he leads a strong team of numerical analysts who pioneer the application of discontinuum methods to produce realistic, explicit simulation of rock masses for engineering design and evaluation. Stavros is often a panellist and keynote lecturer at international conferences and a member of several scientific advisory boards.
